SOCIAL CONDITIONS IN LOGISTICS IN EUROPE: FOCUS ON ROAD TRANSPORT

Voss, Eckhard/Vitols, Dr. Katrin (2019): SOCIAL CONDITIONS IN LOGISTICS IN EUROPE: FOCUS ON ROAD TRANSPORT.

Mobile workers in the logistics industry are not subject to the rules of the posting of Workers Directive. Working conditions in road freight transport are often very problematic in Europe. There is a relentless competition for orders. The workers, who are confronted with increasingly precarious working conditions, are the ones to suffer.

The European Posting of Workers Directive and its regulations are often misused. Furthermore, it doesn’t cover mobile workers in the logistics industry, especially in road traffic. For them, working conditions are often even worse.

Verdi has now compiled the study „Social Conditions in Logistics in Europe“ with trade unions from Denmark and Belgium, the ETF and the EVA Academy, and analyzed the employment and collective bargaining conditions in Germany, Denmark, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic and Austria. The scientific work was made on behalf of ETF, ver.di und EVA by wmp consult.

After extensive collection of data with questionnaires to entrepreneurs, works councils and trade unionists, several workshops on national conditions and expert interviews followed. More than 500 completed questionnaires returned back, because of the support of BGL more than 100 only in Germany.
